On 27 May 2000, South Africa's Under-23 team beat their New Zealand counterparts 1-0 at Vosloorus to secure qualification for their first ever Olympic Games.

AmaGlug-glug had beaten the All Whites 3-2 in Auckland a week earlier courtesy of Matthew Booth's late winner, and it was another tough encounter in the return leg, with Shakes Mashaba's men needing an 87th-minute Daniel Matsau goal to secure the win.

Here, star winger Stanton Fredericks and Neil Greig, then a 20-year-old reporter covering the game for KICK OFF Magazine, reflect on the build-up, the 90 minutes, and the post-match celebrations.
