Morris takes over at Steenberg United

Former Bafana Bafana defender Nasief Morris will lead Steenberg United in the GladAfrica Championship this season.

The 39-year-old replaces Theo Hempe and has been tasked with rebuilding the team from scratch, with a proposed relocation to Johannesburg being blocked by the Premier Soccer League at the 11th hour.

Morris, who won 37 caps for Bafana Bafana, has previous coaching experience in the ABC Motsepe League with Ikapa Sporting and The Magic.

Former national teammate Benni McCarthy has no doubt that Morris will prove a huge success as a coach.

“To see him back, and he’s the head coach at Steenberg, I can only wish him luck in abundance, because I know he’s going to succeed, and he’s going to eventually show people his true qualities - what a great footballer he was - and even a better coach that he’s going to be,” McCarthy is quoted by frunsports.com.

“He deserves it. He’s gone through the ranks. He’s coached in ABC, he’s worked his way up, so he’s not just waited around after his football career, like people owe him a job, or people owe him anything in football, he’s gone and knuckled down, did some of his coaching badges, and he’s coached in lower divisions, and with younger players, and now he’s in with a shot.”
