Fernandes hails Benni influence

Manchester United playmaker Bruno Fernandes has hailed Benni McCarthy’s influence since joining the club.

Bafana Bafana’s record goalscorer was a surprise appointment as first-team coach at Old Trafford last month, but Fernandes says his impact has been felt almost immediately.

“[Working with McCarthy] has been really nice; it’s been a pleasure for me,” he told SuperSport. “As a young player I was seeing him in Portugal playing for FC Porto and scoring many goals. Having him now, for many of my friends and family who support Porto, it’s good for them to come to Manchester and see him and get a photo with him.

“Working with him, he is a really funny person, he’s always positive and [brings] good energy in the dressing room and training ground. He was quality as a player and is quality as a manager. We do many drills, from finishing, headers, many stuff that he was really doing when he was playing. It can help us score some goals.”

United have started the season poorly, but eased some of the pressure on manager Erik ten Hag with an important 2-1 win against Liverpool on Monday.
