Matthew Booth got to see Benni McCarthy up close and personal during their days together with first AmaGlug-glug, and then Bafana Bafana.
As a player, McCarthy was a prolific goalscorer in the Netherlands, Portugal and England, before returning to South Africa with Orlando Pirates and winning a 'treble' of League, Telkom Knockout and MTN8 during the 2011/12 season.
These days McCarthy is approaching similar hero status as a coach, having taken over at AmaZulu in December and transformed them into title contenders before ultimately falling short to the all-conquering Mamelodi Sundowns.
