A versatile defender who served the team well, McCarthy was on the books of Apollon FC in Cyprus at the time of the Olympic Games, but was soon wearing a Mamelodi Sundowns shirt. Originally a Bloemfontein Celtic player, McCarthy joined Kaizer Chiefs in 2003 and gave them great service - and multiple trophies - over the next five years. He played 10 times for Bafana Bafana.
